The Tulane Club of Washington, DC is an active group of local alumni who organize social, educational, and cultural activities for Tulane alumni in the DC area. Our members are leading professionals in numerous fields including law, medicine, public health, business, and education. Some are leaders in their local communities; others are national leaders like U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-LA) and U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor (D-MS).
Many alumni clubs talk about the size of their email lists or the number of registered alums in a geographic area. Although our club boasts an impressive 5,000-person membership, the Tulane Club of DC prefers to measure its membership and success by the number of alums who regularly participate in club activities. We believe this is the true measure of alumni interest and the relevance the club and university play in the everyday life of local alums.
In just the past year the DC Tulane alumni club has fielded co-ed sports teams – flag football, basketball, soccer and softball. We have also hosted events at the National Gallery of Art and the Jewish Community Center. True to our Louisiana roots, we also hosted the most successful crawfish boil in the DC area, an annual Mardi Gras Party, and we bring a large group to the annual Swamp Romp at Wolf Trap.
The relevant - and fun - aspect of the DC Tulane alumni club is that we focus on well balanced activities. Sports keep us fit, intellectual pursuits keep our minds challenged, and our parties keep the good times rolling.
For the balance of 2006, our calendar of events include an evening at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, a sailing cruise on the Chesapeake Bay, a Washington Nationals baseball Game, hopefully bringing home the alumni soccer league championship trophy, and certainly fielding another flag football team.
Activities of the club are always planned and organized by local alumni leadership with the assistance of the Tulane Office of Alumni Affairs. Since the reputation of the club has been to regularly offer exciting and fun events to all alums, we are continually challenging ourselves to try new things, but equally as important involve new people who have great ideas.
This page is an online bulletin board for local alumni to share information and ideas with each other. For example, if you are looking for a roommate, a new job, or new employee, or if you want to announce that a New Orleans band is coming to town, here's where to make your announcement.

WHO All alumni that received a degree from Tulane from a class ending with a 4 or 9. That includes every reunion class starting with our most recent 2009 graduates working back in five year increments ending with the class of 1959's 50th reunion class.
WHAT The Albert H. Small, Jr. Reunion Gift Challenge Grant provides a match for all unrestricted reunion class donations, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000 total. Any unrestricted gift from alumni celebrating their reunion year will trigger the match that will automatically be applied to the Albert H. Small, Jr. Reunion Gift Challenge Grant.
WHEN For five months only - May 10th through October 10th 2009. This challenge will conclude during Tulane's homecoming weekend. The results from this initiative will be presented at the Wave'09 All Alumni party on Friday evening October 9th, 2009.
WHERE The Albert H. Small, Jr. Challenge matched portion of the reunion participants' gift will be directed to the Tulane City Center, which houses the Tulane Architecture's urbanBUILD research and outreach programs. Now, supporting what you love most about your alma mater also means helping the City Center continue its nationally recognized groundbreaking work in rebuilding the city of New Orleans.
WHY The challenge allows alumni to give to Tulane, knowing that the amount they give will be doubled. The impact of new gifts from alumni and matching funds from this challenge will provide essential support for Tulane during its rebuilding process.
This unique award was established six years ago by Timothy Sykes (Tulane College ’03) to recognize and nurture talented individuals whose abilities and accomplishments may not be in traditional areas of endeavor. There are many ways to be “successful” in today's society and this award acknowledges young people with unique interests and passions. This does not preclude from consideration those with significant demonstrated success in the classroom or on the playing field - it simply seeks to broaden the definition of accomplishment in a university environment.
A candidate may self-nominate or be nominated by another member of the Tulane community by means of a statement (minimum 2 pages) that describes the individual’s talent/potential and supports that description with a listing of his/her related accomplishments or an example of the applicant’s work. Nominations are open to any member of the Tulane community – student, faculty, staff or young alumni. Applications for the award will be reviewed by a committee appointed by President Cowen.
Completed nominations are due by April 17, 2009 and may be submitted by email to timsykesaward@tulane.edu or by mailing them to Tulane University Office of Development, 6823 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118. Please call 504.314.7633 with any questions.

Group Meeting Point: Meet the sign "Tours begin here" in the Rotunda on the second floor.
The Tulane Alumni Association is sponsoring a guided tour of the Sculpture Galleries in the West Building of the National Gallery of Art (http://www.nga.gov/collection/sculpture/flash/index.htm) on Sunday, January 22 at 1.00 PM. The sculpture galleries present more than nine hundred works of art. In addition to masterpieces of sculpture from the Middle Ages through the early twentieth century, also featured are decorative arts of the Renaissance and eighteenth-century France, major collections of Italian Renaissance medals and plaquettes, and Chinese porcelains. The sculpture collection has grown dramatically in recent years, benefiting from exceptional donations such as forty-eight original wax statuettes by Edgar Degas, which can be seen alongside the artist's paintings of the same subjects. Significant purchases have also expanded the collection, including the South German Holy Kinship altarpiece, a major work in carved and painted wood.
This is a great opportunity to see these works up close with a guide to explain what exactly you're looking at!
Tickets: Group size is limited to 20 people per tour, and reservations are on a first come first served basis.
