"Only at Tulane can you get a world class education under majestic oak trees, have the opportunity to participate in the rebuilding and revival of a city, and spend four years with educators who really care about their students."
- Rusty Pickering E'91
At Tulane you get two educations: one academic and one cultural. Only in New Orleans can you experience Mardi Gras, the Jazz Festival, and the French Quarter; listen to Late as Usual at the Tropical Isle, eat at Commander's Palace, have chicken wings at Fat Harry's, spend sunny days at the levee, try a hundred different beers at Cooter Brown's, order late night cheese fries, eat at a different world class restaurant every time you can afford it, have cocktails at the Columns Hotel and beignets at Café Du Monde, listen to Cowboy Mouth, the Radiators, Marva Wright, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, and Professor Longhair, hear Jazz at a funeral, waive a handkerchief at a wedding, meet Ms. Mae, catch a coconut at the Zulu parade, eat crawfish bread, boudin, etoufee, gumbo, a dressed Po-Boy, pralines, and red beans and rice, ride a Streetcar, find a baby in a King Cake, make groceries, yell "Who Dat?" and "Where Ya At?", eat crawfish like popcorn, see the Neville Brothers at Tipitina's, have a muffaletta at the Central Grocery, bet on a horse race, gamble on a river boat, have a Pim's Cup at the Napoleon House, eat Sno-Balls at Hansen's, shop on Royal Street on a Sunday afternoon, have Jazz brunch, scream "Throw Me Somethin" for cheap plastic beads like your life depended on it, stand on the neutral ground, dance on a pool table at F&Ms, get your car booted, have your Café Brulee set on fire, and learn how to say "le bon temps roule", lagniappe, flambeaux, and Tchoupitoulas. Did I mention there was an academic education too?
Tulane is a unique and wonderful place to spend 4 years, and not only because it is in New Orleans. It has shown remarkable resilience after Katrina, surviving and emerging as a stronger, better and more focused university. Only at Tulane can you go to Jambalaya Day at the baseball stadium, see Ellen DeGeneres at commencement, and find President Cowen with green hair at a football game. And only at Tulane can you get a world class education under majestic oak trees, have the opportunity to participate in the rebuilding and revival of a city, and spend four years with educators who really care about their students. I had the opportunity to return last year and spend time with some of my engineering professors. I was amazed to find that every one of them remembered me, if not always for the best reasons.
The most important thing that I left Tulane with are the friendships that I made there. Anywhere I travel in the United States or abroad, there is always someone I can call on for lunch or a cup of coffee. For many years, a large group of us vacationed together every year at Pauleys Island in South Carolina, until the collective size of our families made it impractical. Another group of us meet every few years in Florida for Spring Training. A few years ago I randomly ran into a fraternity brother on the street in London. 15 years ago one of my friends introduced me to the law firm where I am now a senior partner, and another is now the managing partner of our office. The friends I made at Tulane are the closest relationships I have ever had. Even though we are separated by many miles and are busy with our families and work, we keep in touch and remain close in ways that my friends from other periods of my life do not. For all of you, I am eternally grateful, and to Tulane for bringing us together.
